How to be a Tourist in Downtown Frederick

When was the last time you took a few days to just get out of town and explore somewhere new? Yeah, that's we thought. Stop adding things to your "Vacations (someday)" Pinterest board and just hop in the car and drive.

If you live in D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, or even Pittsburgh or Richmond, your weekend destination isn't as far away as you think. Just an hour from D.C., Frederick, MD is surrounded by mountain views, wineries, orchards and the state's largest brewery. And because planning a vacation is the least fun part of actually taking a vacation, we partnered up with Visit Frederick to give us the inside scoop on how to take on Downtown Frederick like you know what you're doing.

Melissa Muntz, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Visit Frederick, starts us off at (where else) the Frederick Visitor Center. Located at 151 S East St, the Visitor Center is a great place to drop your car and catch your breath before heading into the rest of downtown. You can leave your car in the E All Saints Street Public Parking Garage and spend the weekend on foot for a care-free experience, or park out back at one of their temporary Visitor spaces if you're just popping in for a quick visit.

Once you've ditched the wheels, pop in to the Visitor Center to get an idea of the special events that are going on during your stay. If you time your trip during the first weekend of the month, you can make a night of it with Downtown Frederick's First Saturday. Shops stay open late, there's music on the streets, and a free trolley to get you where you're going.

And now... we're off! With Melissa as my guide, we set out to create the ultimate tourist experience for Downtown Frederick.

The Delaplaine Arts Center

Located at 40 S Carroll St, the Delaplaine Arts Center is just around the corner from the Visitor Center, so it's a great way to start your trip. It's open seven days a week, admission to the building is always free, plus it's dog-friendly!

Some of Melissa's favorite stops include the upstairs gallery (where you can sneak the perfect view of the Community Bridge's famous anamorphic projection mural), then back down to the gallery gift shop before exiting through the beautiful gardens that line Carroll Creek.

Emporium Antiques

With its double entrances that span most of a city block, Melissa calls Emporium Antiques her favorite secret cut-through in Downtown Frederick. You can either go in the main entrance at 112 E Patrick St, or come in the back at 21 S Carroll St. Another dog-friendly stop, Emporium Antiques is the kind of place where you can get lost for days... and I don't exaggerate.

Melissa says you have to check out the vintage postcards section, so start there and then just let your eye lead the way. This is an especially great stop if the weather is less than perfect outside, or you're looking to spend a lazy morning just browsing and daydreaming.

...and just like that, we're on Patrick Street! Let the shopping continue. No trip to Downtown Frederick would be complete with a little (okay... a lot) shopping and dining. Melissa says the best thing to do it just start walking. As you head up Patrick Street you'll pass by dozens of unique stores, like Ec'clectiblesDancing Bear ToysDream HouseVenus on the Half ShellVinyl AcresFabulous Finds and the list goes on!

National Museum of Civil War Medicine

If you're a history buff, you definitely don't want to pass up the chance to see Downtown Frederick's most visited tourist attraction, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine at 48 E Patrick St. Tucked between Brainstorm Comics and Relish Decor, the museum follows in the footsteps of soldiers and surgeons to discover the harsh conditions, personal sacrifices, and brilliant innovations of Civil War Medicine. Melissa even shares her own insider secret to, at the very least, check out the historic photos on display inside the main entrance.

Grab Lunch & Shop Your Way to N Market Street

By now, you've surely worked up an appetite so Melissa recommends heading toward Firestone's Culinary Tavern at 105 N Market St. Situated right next to Firestone's Raw Bar and Firestone's Market on Market, you'll undoubtedly be able to find something that fits whatever you're in the mood for. There are a ton of amazing restaurants in Downtown Frederick, so it's also never too early to start window shopping for your dinner spot.

After you've got that warm, full-bellied feeling, walk it off on your way to a root beer float. Yeah... we're not kidding. You're on vacation!! Don't worry though, you'll be plenty distracted along the way, so you'll be ready for round two by the time you reach dessert.

We had to make more than a few pit stops on our way up Market Street. The shopping is unbeatable and offers everything from clothing and jewelry, to books, records, outdoor gear and home decor. Every store you walk by is worth checking out. You never know what you're going to find! For a complete list of downtown shops, visit or ask a shop-owner where you can grab a Downtown Frederick tear-off map.

When you see a cheery blue building in the distance, you know ice cream is within your reach. Melissa says that the floats from North Market Pop Shop are her favorite guilty pleasure in Downtown Frederick.

Just pick your own soda (there are only 400 flavors to choose from, so get ready to be overwhelmed), get a couple scoops of ice cream and you're on your way to the perfect portable dessert.

You can either hang out in front of the shop and watch the world go by on Market Street, or take your float on the move and walk over to Baker Park. We were out on a particularly gorgeous day, so we decided to take our floats to the park.

Time for Happy Hour... you've earned it!

From Baker Park, round out your trip with a stroll along Carroll Creek. It's the perfect one mile walk to the ultimate reward.
(Hint: It's beer. The reward is always beer.)

Attaboy Beer is one of Melissa's favorites, with their rotating taps and crisp, seasonal flavors poured straight from the side of a refrigerator truck, Attaboy is the perfect happy hour location. While you're sipping on a brew (or two) you can even entertain yourself with a game of shuffle board, corn hole, or (our personal favorite) Bananagrams.

Their indoor/outdoor beer garden lets you hang outside, no matter the weather. So CHEERS to your weekend in Downtown Frederick! Have a blast and get ready to fall in love with the little city that keeps on giving.

A special thank you to Melissa Muntz, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for Visit Frederick for being our Downtown Frederick tour guide.

As always, Yoga on the Creek will usher in our weekend Thursday morning at 7am, followed by Alive @ Five from 5-8pm.  This week we have Audio Whiplash performing rock and roll.

Friday evening has a diverse mix of action with live music at VINI Culture, Comedy Pigs performance at the MET, along with a rejuvenating candlelight yoga and essential oils class.

VINI Culture is back with another opportunity Saturday at 2pm. Did you know that Vini Culture Wine Bar's owner Donna travels to the places they get their wine from to better learn about and choose the wines they showcase? At this tasting, you will try some of the team's favorites as well as learn about their travels to Italy! Who doesn't want to dream about travelling to Italy?

Saturday evening has plenty of live entertainment! Sky Stage has Joint Operation which is a touring reggae/rock band based out of Baltimore, MD. They play a little bit of everything, and love to give their fans a party at every show.

Starting at 10pm on Saturday, one of downtown's Alive @ Five alumni is set to perform at JoJo's Restaurant and Tap House! Guys in Thin Ties will be performing well into the evening, so stop on by to enjoy their entertainment.

This Weekend in Downtown | August 18th

We hope you had a high time last weekend for the annual High Wheel Bicycle Race!  It started out as a beautiful day for this historic activity, yet as the afternoon went on downtown had quite the rain storm.  Our famous Market street experienced minor flooding, but it didn't last for long, and soon the streets were once again open to foot traffic.  As the evening progressed, there was a beautiful golden sun hue reflecting on puddles and windows, along with a vibrant rainbow lighting the sky.  What a beautiful evening it was! There's always something unique occurring in downtown, and we're back this week to clue you in on the 4-1-1.

Has the summer gotten away from you? Take a moment to pause and center yourself with Yoga on the Creek Thursday and Friday morning at 7am.  Sol Yoga kicks off Thursday while Ananda Shala welcomes you back Friday morning.
Thursday evening ushers in everyone's favorite outdoor happy hour, with Alive @ Five kicking off at, you guessed it, 5pm! This week hosts 9 Mile Roots which is a Suburban Roots Reggae band built behind a solid group of musicians pulling from diverse backgrounds.  The music delivers creative tunes that have a strong reggae vibe with a bouncy hip-hop flow and a bit of a rock edge. See you on the Creek!

Alive @ Five 2017 is a summer-long fundraiser for Downtown Frederick Partnership, presented by DARCARS Toyota of Frederick. These events are made possible by a wonderful team of sponsors. All proceeds from Alive @ Five are reinvested into the downtown community. Stay up to date on weather alerts regarding any event by liking Downtown Frederick Partnership on Facebook or visiting our website.

The 3rd Friday of the months means it's time to grab your chair or blanket and head back to the creek, because movie night is about to take place!  This week Shrek will be showing at 9pm with gates opening by 8pm.  Eat like an ogre by creating your own hodge podge movie meal by stopping through some of the many snack and dinner options downtown that you're welcome to bring into the event, or let us host you with traditional movie night snacks, beverages, and alcoholic drinks available for purchase.  This free event welcomes all ages and provides closed captioning.  We'll see you there!

Movie Night on the Creek is a free community event, thanks to the support of Wantz Distributors, The Delaplaine Foundation, Wegmans, Frederick County Bank, Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, and Rick Jones Electric.

Looking for another family friendly event? The MET will be showcasing Young Camelot all this weekend with showings at 7pm.  Saturday the 19th will also host an ASL interpreted performance.  "Before Arthur and Guinevere sat on the throne, before Merlin wielded his staff and before anyone ever gathered around a round table, they were all students at the world renowned school for sorcery, knighthood, and ladyship…Avalon Academy. For generations the sorcery students and the knights in training enjoyed a passionate rivalry while the ladies kept to sidelines. All of that, however, is about to change."

Grab a glass or meal before or after any event this weekend, as VINI Culture and JoJo's Restaurant & Tap House will have live music performances both Friday and Saturday evening.

In need of a way to keep your hand and mind occupied? The Delaplaine consistently hosts many fascinating workshops where you can create your own masterpiece, and this weekend is no different! Come along on Saturday or Sunday from 11:30-4pm as you learn the basics to weaving on a simple loom frame with Joh Ricci.

You won't see this everyday, so Join Ananda Shala to "Find your purr-fect yoga buddy at this special workshop! The Shala is teaming up with Frederick County Animal Control to bring adoptable cats to mingle on the mats. Cats currently available for adoption will be free-roaming the classroom during a Basic Yoga Class taught by Irene Glasse. Interact with new furry friends outside the shelter and get a feel for the purr-sonality of these wonderful creatures. Proceeds benefit FCAC."

Simiarliy to the Delaplaine, The Muse hosts creative workshops throughout the summer.  This week join them on Sunday from 3-5pm as you create two unique pieces of jewelry.  "With every random act of kindness, teacher Lynne Suprock is inspired by the heart-ful-ness we share with one another. Lynne shows you how to create two necklaces (one for you & one for a friend) Learn to use alcohol inks and the butane torch on brass to create beautiful bursts of color. Tools and supplies included to create two take home necklaces or bracelets if you prefer!"
