Sharpening Your Competitive Edge in 2017

As a small business owner and entrepreneur, it can be hard to find the tools you need to improve your business. With the support of PNC Bank, Downtown Frederick Partnership is pleased to host the 2017 Competitive Edge Series – featuring four months of free workshops that will help Frederick County business owners sharpen their competitive edge.

Sessions are held on the third Tuesday of each month, February through May from 8:30 to 9:30AM. Workshops meet at The Delaplaine Center, located at 40 S Carroll St in Downtown Frederick. To register, visit competitiveedge2017.eventbrite.com

The series begins on February 21 with a presentation from the National Retail Federation’s Manager of Communications, Tony Fontana. He will be discussing useful tools to help monitor a business’ social media presence and create great content while providing real life examples from other small businesses during his presentation, “Social Smarts: What You Need to Know About What’s New in Social Media.” Fontana will return for Part II of his session on March 21 – appropriately titled, “Social Media Savvy: For the More Experienced User.”

On April 18, the Partnership will welcome Tom Shay from Profits Plus Solutions for their keynote event, “Owning the Business: Ten Factors that Impact Your Bottom Line.” This presentation will cover the very real topics that small business owners deal with each day – from implementing standardized business hours and maintaining employee relations, to stocking inventory and making budgetary decisions. Tom Shay's experiences as a fourth-generation small business owner provide him with the knowledge and background to present tried and proven ideas that will assist owners, managers, and staff with the day to day operation of their business.

Merchants located in Downtown Frederick have the opportunity to receive one-on-one sessions with Tom Shay following his presentation. To apply for one of these sessions, complete an interest form by Friday, March 3 or contact Leeann Dickerson at leeann@downtownfrederick.org

The final workshop of the 2017 Competitive Edge Series will be on May 16. Presented by a panel of Downtown Frederick merchants, “Putting Your Best Face Forward: Make Your Storefront and Window Displays Work For You” will be a deep-dive exploration of how to get customers off the sidewalk and into your business.
