A Day in the Life: Whitney, the Muse

This blog post is written by Whitney Dahlberg, owner of the Muse, and is the first in a series of guest blog posts that will take you into a "Day in the Life" in Downtown Frederick.

Getting off of the East St exit, I turn onto Patrick St and immediately I'm taken with the beauty of Downtown Frederick, a sight I will never take for granted.  The tree lined street sets off the rows of unique storefronts.  Grabbing a coffee to go,  I smile as I watch the regulars hanging outside of Cafe Nola discussing politics and the weather. I think about how fortunate I am to have these characters to say hello to every morning. The sense of familiarity that I start my day with weaves its way throughout my day and my life in Frederick.

I come into my shop, The Muse, early to take care of paperwork and am greeted by the amazing smells of handmade soaps and candles. A few minutes later, Gwen Ottinger, a local potter, pops in with some of her gorgeous new pottery. It's so hard to choose! I check out all of her offerings and select my favorites to fill the Muse's shelves.

10 o'clock comes and I flip over the door sign to "open," start the music and roll out my sidewalk sign- let's do this! As the day progresses, the store fills in and out with bustling people; the out-of-towners looking for Frederick made items to take home to family, Mike from his nearby office stopping by to grab a card for his wife, the bunch of chatty ladies out for lunch to celebrate a birthday, and Emma, the popular neighborhood dog looking for her daily dog treat. This is what I love. The familiar friendly faces that I can count on to inspire my day and sense of purpose.

I end my days in my own home studio. The quiet calm of the space and the satisfaction of a productive full day allows me to unwind. After a day filled with unique conversations, creative decision making and a setting surrounded by art and inspirations, I take this time to quietly stitch and reflect on how very good life is.

Alive @ Five - The 19th Street Band - July 28

The 19th Street Band

Thursday, July 28 - 5-8PM

If The 19th Street Band could be summed up in a phrase, it would be "old school." From their folk instruments (upright bass, fiddle and acoustic guitars), to their approach to music and performance, The 19th Street Band has followed the traditions of The Carter Family and The Kingston Trio, while also integrating modern elements of americana, country and rock n' roll. The 19th Street Band has built its fan base the old school way, one fan at a time. They play hundreds of shows a year, from backyard BBQs, to honky-tonks, to amphitheaters. Every time they play, their music and energy connects with a new person in the crowd.

Be sure to catch The 19th Street Band rock the Creek during the 2016 Alive @ Five summer concert series. Enjoy your happy hour the right way: with a cold beer, great wine and the best live music!

Downtown Frederick Parking Update

As of July 2016, the City of Frederick adjusted parking rates in Downtown Frederick. We know, nobody likes to hear about prices going up. But, the increases are important in helping to not just maintain, but improve parking options downtown (like a much-needed sixth parking garage!)

We broke down the changes that are now in place:

Fine Increases:
  • Overtime parking meter $20.00 from $15.00
  • 2 hour parking (parking more than 2 hours) $20.00 from $15.00
  • Loading Zone $75.00 from $50.00
  • Handicap Parking $250.00 from $100.00

Parking meter rates will increase to $2.00 per hour on the following blocks*:
  • 0-99 block of S Market St
  • 0-299 block of N Market St
  • 0-199 block of E Patrick St
  • 0-199 block of W Patrick St
  • 0-99 block of E Church St
  • 0-99 block of W Church St
Why the rate increases in these specific blocks? The new rates will help encourage turnover, which means when you are running a quick errand downtown, spaces in these busier parts of town are more likely to be available to you.

*Parking meter rates remain $1 per hour everywhere else

New Parking Garage Fees + Schedule:
  • 24 hours per day, Mon. – Sun., $1.00 per hour
  • 6:30AM – 3:30PM, maximum daily rate $12.00
  • 3:30PM – 6:30AM, maximum nightly rate $5.00
  • Daily rate begins 6:30AM each day
  • Sunday, free parking 8:00AM – 2:00PM
  • Monthly passes remain $97.00/month

Special Event Garage Fees:
  • In the Street, $6.00 Flat Rate
  • February First Saturday- Fire in  Ice, $5.00 Flat Rate

How to Pay:
Cash, credit cards and reloadable prepaid garage cards (call 301.600.1429 for info) are accepted in all parking garages.

At parking meters, payment can be made with change, a reloadable prepaid meter card (call the number above for info) or using the Parkmobile app (which can be linked to your credit card or PayPal account).

Parking garages are most cost effective, so if you're staying downtown for a longer period of time, park in one of the five downtown garages.

For full information on the City of Frederick's parking options, click here or call 301.600.1429. Happy parking!
